The Wellington Gliding Club is fortunate to be based at the Paraparaumu airfield on the Kapiti coast 50km north of Wellington. The Paraparaumu location affords tremendous soaring possibilities for glider pilots. The club also operates in the Wairarapa from Hood Aerodrome in Masterton, though training is normally conducted at Paraparaumu.

The soaring season kicks off very early in August thanks to the prevailing westerlies, creating smooth reliable ridge lift along a 250km long range of hills. An upwind island creates a very tame "pet" wave offering easy climbs to 12000 feet or more.

Our Location

The Kapiti coast has a climate quite different to Wellington, and although the weather may be bad in the city, it is often warm and sunny in the coast and quite soarable.

The airfield (Kapiti Coast Airport, previously Paraparaumu Airport) is located approximately one hour's drive from Wellington CBD along SH1, taking a left at Kapiti Road in Paraparaumu. Whether coming from North or South you can use the interactive Google map below to assist.

The club house is located on the south eastern side of the airfield. To get to the club house turn off Kapiti Road at the Mitre10 Mega Center roundabout, look for the signposted gap in the fence on your right, and follow the metal road around the border of the airfield.

The runway in use will depend on the wind direction on the day. When you turn up, make yourself known to someone at the club house and they will either escort you to the operations caravan ('Checkers') or arrange for someone to come and pick you up and escort you onto the airfield.
